MINERALOGY: Multicolored Tourmaline, sometimes called Parti or Polychrome Tourmaline, is a variety of the complex boron silicate mineral group with the general formula (Ca,K,Na)(Al,Fe,Li,Mg,Mn)₃(Al,Cr,Fe,V)₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH,F)₄. Its stunning range of colors within a single crystal results from fluctuating trace element concentrations — particularly iron, manganese, lithium, and chromium — during crystal growth. It crystallizes in the trigonal system as striated prismatic columns and has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5. Watermelon Tourmaline, with its iconic pink core and green rind, is among the most celebrated multicolored varieties.
